Petroleum geochemistry is applicable throughout the exploration and production lifecycle. In the following pages we briefly outline the different geochemical approaches and techniques that can be applied during the different stages of the exploration lifecycle. In general, but by no means the rule, screening programmes with a higher sampling density are common in relatively unexplored basins. As exploration matures and once a broad understanding of the petroleum system(s) is gained, analyses will become progressively more detailed. Discovered oil samples will be characterised and compared not only to other oils but source rock samples as well.
