Like any of the scientific discipline associated with hydrocarbon exploration, geochemistry programmes can potentially generated a lot of data. The data lifecycle can be split into three key stages, each of which is equally important to a successful interpretation and petroleum system model.

Data investigation and visualisation. A common problem of some databases is that once the data has been archived, it has a hard time trying to get back out. Efficient and user-friendly methods are needed to maximise work flow

Data acquisition .The design of the geochemical analytical programme must carefully address the specific needs of the project. Needless to say, quality control must be checked at all stages of an analytical program.

Data archiving, including the implementation and updating of a suitable database

There is a whole array of geochemical data available in the public domain. Much of this is present in a fairly heterogeneous state and often only reported as either scanned pdf documents or simple ASCII text files.

DESL are continuously reviewing the available data and working it into a coherent database. The contents of these database (in terms of the number of analyses rather than the actual values!) can be viewed below:
