Regional Prospect Evaluation

Regional prospect evaluation combines our knowledge of source rock variations (organo-facies mapping) and maturity/burial history modelling. The overall objective is to estimate the extent, type and timing of hydrocarbon charge to any given propsect. By doing this, the risk associated with hydrocarbon charge can be quantified and this in turn can be used in the overall ranking of regional prospects.

The process of prospect evaluation can be as simple or complex as necessary (or more often than not, possible based on the available data). Prospect evaluation can be used from the earliest stages of exploration to provide "ball park" figures or answer "what if?" scenarios. DESL provide a simple spreadsheet volumetric form in thier client area.

As exploration matures and more data becomes available, regional source rock trends may become apparent. Parameters such as the kerogen type and richness can be mapped and integrated into more complex prospect evaluation model.

Regional variations in temperature/heat flow and hence maturity can also be mapped, both spatially at the present day and at key stages in the geological past. Integration of kerogen kinetics ultimately leads to an understanding of the extent of oil andgas generation throughout the devlopment of the basin.
